Best Holiday Parks By the Lakes in the Lake District

Our Favourite Caravan Parks in the Lake District

So you are planning a holiday to the Lake District for the first time and you actually want to be by the lake, surely that is the whole point? Well yes, for some but a lot of the holiday parks in the area are not actually lakeside, indeed some of the larger parks are not strictly speaking even in the Lake District although the driving distances are short and more than pleasurable and you have to drive to most places anyway.

So we thought we would give you a small selection of Lake District holiday parks that are actually by the lakes so that you can get the best experience on your holiday! Enjoy our research and if you think that we may have missed a park, please let us know, we would love to hear from you!

Windermere, Cumbria

White Cross Bay Holiday Park gets our vote, one of our top Parkdean Resorts holiday parks so you get to holiday right by the side of Windermere just down the road from Troutbeck Bridge. This Lake District holiday park is right by the side of the lake with a small marina as well and has all of the facilities you need in a beautiful woodland and lakeside location. This is a larger family park so really geared towards family holidays by the lakes. There are holiday lodges and static caravans on the park including dog friendly accommodation on site.

The facilities include an indoor pool with a sauna and steam room, adventure playground and multi sports court, amusement arcade, takeaway, bar and a restaurant. The traditional Parkdean entertainment is on site in the entertainment venue and a range of activities to keep everyone happy. The big draw here is a large holiday park on the shores of Lake Windermere with Windermere itself just a very short drive away. There is loads to do on site and in the nearby location and whilst the park is larger than some of the other parks, the quiet location means that it is fairly hassle free!

Avon Wood Park is a complete contrast and is a small site so the number of holiday homes that can be booked is limited. This is a holiday park where it is all about getting away from it all, relaxation, peace and quiet. Not everyone wants a pool or evening entertainment, if that is you and you just want your own space in a stunning location on the shores of Lake Windermere, this is a perfect choice. They have their own slipway as well so if you want to bring your own boat or canoe, brilliant, off you go!

If you are lucky enough to stay here, you get all of the peace you will ever need, the park is surrounded by natural woodland and easy to reach, there are plenty of walks nearby and the main road is just outside the park. Not for the jet setters, more for getting away from literally everything, what a gem!

Bowness-on-Windermere, Windermere

Fallbarrow Holiday Park is probably the best known and most popular holiday park for being set by the lakes in the Lake District. This is another Parkdean Resorts park and is very popular with dog owners as there are plenty of walks from the park and it is a short walk into Bowness-on-Windermere which is well developed and a main centre for the tourism industry on Windermere.

The location really is a major selling point, right on the shores of the lake and there are lots of things to do on the park and also in Bowness-on-Windermere including boat trips across the lakes and water sports. You can enjoy the new bar and restaurant as well as a Costa, we all love a Costa! There is an adventure playground on site and amusement arcade but no swimming pool which is a surprise really as the park is pretty big! There is limited on site entertainment, depending on the time of week and the time of year but there is plenty to do in the town just a short walk away. It is all about the location, here, right in the heart of the Lake District!

We covered Park Cliffe as one of the best dog friendly holiday parks in the Lake District but we thought it deserved a mention here as well, we love this park, it is a real gem. It is all about the outdoors here, the park is right by the side of Lake Windermere with woodlands between you and the shore line and backed by moorland. Again, a perfect holiday park if you want to bring your dog, this park is just about open spaces, just walk out to the back of the park up the hills and enjoy the views, it is pretty spectacular and we really rate this as a park to visit if you want to explore and have a real traditional Lake District holiday.

There’s a great adventure playground for the kids and an amusement arcade and games room if the weather is not that great.  There is a nice homely bar on site, they serve breakfasts at weekends out of season and during the main season, every day. There is also a pop up street food trailer at the weekends and they also do Sunday roasts! It is all about the location though here, what a stunning location it is, we think Park Cliffe is a real gem!
